What is Product Management?

Product management is the intersection between Tech, Strategy, and User Experience (UX). All of these elements make up the product and someone has to be responsible for managing and aligning all of these aspects to ensure a successful product (or feature) launch.

What do Product Managers (PMs) do?

In general, some of the main tasks you can expect to do as a PM include:

  • Defining and prioritising the product features
  • Creating the product plan, vision, and roadmap
  • Work with engineering and UX teams to build features
  • Facilitate the successful launch and land of the product

Do you need a technical background to work as a PM?

Mostly, no. But, this is dependent on the company you want to work for. Google requires some technical experience, whereas I believe most companies do not require a degree in CS, just a passion for technology.

What skills are needed to become a PM?

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Product sense
  • User-centric mindset (i.e. empathy with others)
  • Strong analytical skills (estimation, metrics, etc)
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with teams

What is the difference between an APM and a PM?

An Associate Product Manager (APM) is an entry-level role in product management. Some tech companies have APM programs, which offer newly graduated people to learn about PMing through multiple rotations on different teams.

Why would you want to work as a PM?

  • Opportunity to build and manage cool products
  • Attractive compensation packages
  • Empowering work that has a strong impact on users
