3 Tips that Helped me Land an Internship at Google

The famous Google internship hat!

After reflecting on my journey to Google, I have picked out what I believe are the 3 most impactful things I did that helped me land my business internship and get my foot in the door.

#1 — Take Advantage of Student Opportunities

I believe this is by far the most important tip to take on board if you are still a student. Most large technology companies offer programs, insight days/weeks, and competitions specifically aimed at students that’s primary purpose is to identify early talent. It was a long road to me landing an interview at Google: firstly I attended an Insight Day in September 2019, I then applied and got accepted onto the BOLD program in Summer 2020, and then I got the opportunity to interview for the internship for Summer 2021. Each experience got me more visibility to the recruiters and one step closer to that final offer.

#2— Always actively ask for feedback

It is so important to regularly request feedback from others, as this is what will help you develop as a person. Before applying to both the BOLD program and then sending my CV to the recruiter afterward, I gained valuable feedback from others on my CV to ensure that it was properly tailored and optimised for the position I was applying for. Even asking for feedback about smaller things, such as your communication style or your LinkedIn profile from your friends, family, and mentors will put you in a much better position as opposed to if you didn’t ask at all.

This one may seem small — but every piece of useful feedback you get improves your chances and develops you more as a person. You also get to become more self-aware which is always a plus!

#3 — Be grateful for any help that people offer

Something that is often overlooked, is actually just being a pleasant person to interact with. If people are offering advice or help to you, be appreciative and show the other person that you are. Not only is this just morally the right thing to do, but it also helps to strengthen your relationship with this connection. People are much more likely to want to help or make an extra effort for someone who is kind and genuine. A positive impression and interaction can lead to a whole host of opportunities; whether that is introducing you to a key contact, or taking a chance on you when they may not have done prior.
